It was wonderful to see this spoon-wing lacewing flying and feeding at 39C. Often insects sit in the shade at that temperature. I noticed the lacewing flying toward me across an opening between two Darwinia sp Karonie shrubs. It’s hind wings were held out almost sideways and still (not flapping) as it flew slowly and in a wave pattern. The lacewing landed on a flower head and proceeded to feed, moving around the head of flowers. It fed on three flower heads flying between flowers. When it took off again, it flew two metres into the air over a nearby shrub where it disappeared into the background. Generally we see them flying much closer to the ground. It is the first time we have actually seen these lacewings feeding. |
